Hello Winter Community Garden members,

We have made the transition to the winter season now. For most of you this is just continuing what you have been doing all summer. But there are some who have just joined us for the winter, so we will review and clarify some of the procedures for everyone.

1. Parking - Drive around the shop and park by the house. It may be winter, but we are still picking and packing wholesale orders, so do not park out in front of the packing and storage sheds. Park by our car, or if those spots are full, to the left of our yellow van on the concrete or behind “Goliath”, our ’54 Chrysler. On Tuesday’s and Friday’s when our van is out delivering, do not park in its space please. The last place to park anytime is to the right of the van since it partially blocks the roadway, especially with larger vehicles.

2. Produce – We try to keep the blackboards in the packing shed up to date with what is available. In general there may be greens, etc. on the shelf in the cooler with potatoes, onions, cabbage, and beets in the bins. The winter squash is next door in the storage shed. There are many varieties so be brave and keep trying some new ones.

3. Timing – Produce is available Monday through Saturday. We pick many items fresh on Monday’s and Thursday’s as we pack for our deliveries the following day, so the inventory may be low on those mornings on fresh picked items like kale, cauliflower, etc. So you might find a more complete inventory the following days. The buildings are not locked so you can come after dark on these shorter days. Turn all lights off when you are done.

4. Plastic bags – we are out of plastic produce bags, so we encourage you to clean out your storage and bring them to us for everyone’s use. Do not bring newspaper bags and other small unusable ones. Many of you bring your reusable bags, which is great, but others do not.

5. Work – Generally there is not work to do now that the weather has gotten wet. But we have a couple jobs to do for the handful of you that have a few winter hours to finish. Someone could dig and wash a quantity of carrots so that others do not have to go to the field in the mud. There are some annual flowers to be removed from flower beds yet, and more leaves to rake and haul again.

We hope to have a good supply of winter items for the next several months. The spring will bring an abundance of purple sprouting broccoli and cauliflower. We look forward to seeing all of you from time to time.

As we approach Thanksgiving we can be thankful for God’s blessing on all of our lives. It has been a blessing to us to hear stories from a number of you about how your lives are being enriched by all the organic produce. We thank the Lord that he put this program together for our mutual benefit.
