Community Garden members use their skills and time to help Mustard Seed Farms grow the produce; our farm is just like your own garden. Members can pick all the produce they need for their families. There is always lots of work to do - a variety of skills are needed to help your garden grow! (This web page is maintained with Community Garden labor)
You can only sign up when the current year's form is on the site. Please print it and mail it to us with a check. The form for the summer program is normally available by April. You can join up through July 1 of each year. You must sign up for the winter program by September 1st and the work needs to be done by October 31st, because it is too wet and cold to work in the winter.
The Outline
The whole program is based upon 2 seasons, summer and winter, and on families, whether that is a single person, a couple, or parents and kids. The hours of work are for the whole season, can be done by 1 or more members of the family on behalf of the whole family, and all the hours need to be done by the end of the summer season. You can get produce as soon as some is ready and if you have started to put in some hours of work. See application for hours and cost.
What:Members work on the farm on their own schedule, Mon. to Sat., mostly hoeing on whatever crops need attention at that time. In exchange, they get all the organic produce that they need for their immediate family.
When:
There are 2 seasons, a summer one and a winter one. Work starts in May, or maybe earlier. All work for both seasons ends by Oct. 31, because of the rain.
How: It is a self directed program, with guidelines given by Farmer Brown & his Mrs. The members need to plan their time to work and come regularly for their produce. Check the blackboards regularly for what is available.
Cautionary Observations
1. Think long and hard about your interests and other commitments. It is hard to get all the time in without a regular farm work schedule.
2. Type of work: Most of the work Community Gardeners do is hoeing weeds, so one should be physically fit for that task. There are special projects like bin repair for experienced carpenters, landscape pruning, etc.
3. Food safety: New food safety guidelines are being put in place to prevent product contamination. We will have guidelines for good hygiene/sanitation practices for members, especially children in the field and packing shed.
CropsThey are listed below. Let us know about any veggies you want to can or freeze so we can let you know when quantities are available.
Come join us for tasty veggies throughout this coming year. We will work hard to grow you the finest organic crops available anywhere. Thanks for helping your local farm.
