Organic soil health and USDA Organic certification

Many families first meet us through the Mustard Seed Farms home page, then ask what certified organic really means in the field. This short guide answers that question for neighbors, CSA members, and wholesale buyers who want plain facts without marketing noise.

What the organic label tracks on our ground

USDA Organic rules cover seed sources, soil amendments, pest control, harvest practices, and how we keep organic and non-organic items separate after picking. Our St. Paul ground on French Prairie has carried organic certification since 1991. That long record matters because soil biology builds slowly, and repeated small choices add up across seasons.

Soil stewardship you can picture

We rotate vegetable families so root pests and nutrient demands do not stack up in one block year after year. Cover crops hold rainfall on our silty prairie soils, add root channels, and feed microbes between cash crops. Compost and approved minerals feed crops when soil tests show a real gap, not on a guess. Tillage is limited to what the weed pressure in a wet Oregon spring demands, because every pass costs structure and air space underground.

Records, inspection, and your box of vegetables

Each season we file maps, input invoices, cleaning logs for bins and tools, and harvest notes. An accredited inspector walks the farm annually, checks random fields, and reviews those records. When you pick up a CSA share or sell our produce at retail, that paper trail is the link between the green sign at the road and the food on the scale.
