Good evening winter CSA members,
Here we are at the beginning of the winter season, with a cold spell on the way to really make it feel like winter. We got all of the winter squash picked up this last Friday so it will all be inside where it will keep as long as possible for you.
I just looked down the list of produce we have for you tomorrow and was surprised to see that after switching around between items we ended up with 4 of your 6 items being red! I don’t know how that happens but your nutrition this week will have all the antioxidants that come from red produce. They are red beets, red cabbage, red chard, and red onions. The first 2 are in abundance right now. We chose the chard instead of a kale in case the chard gets damaged with the upcoming cold, besides it will be quite attractive on your plate. In case you are unfamiliar with chard, you can cook the stem and all, unlike kale where you remove the center rib/stem.
The next item is Yukon Gold potatoes. Those creamy yellow spuds are so good that our bookkeeper fixed a large quantity for her extended family at a recent Sunday afternoon lunch. The adult kids had to have some fun with them so they filled a large bowl really full, but then kept piling them up into a tall cone at least a foot or more tall! Of course I think they consumed all of them at that one sitting because they were so tasty.
The winter squash this week is kabocha, the Japanese version of buttercup. Do you know that this drier fleshed squash is a staple in Japan, so they have it grown all around the world at different times of the year so that they can have it all year around. We grew an acre of it 15 or 20 years ago for that market.
For you new winter members all of this wonderful produce will be ready for you at Jody’ place tomorrow, Tuesday between 4 and 6:30 PM.
We hope you have a good 2 weeks of eating. Just a note about the next pick-up time in 2 weeks so that you can plan ahead, we will have pie pumpkins for you, along with a recipe, so you can make fresh pumpkin pies.
Thanks,
Farmer Brown and His Mrs.
